A devastating weekend for the environment

FIRE Cyprus 14 A devastating weekend for the environment Arboreal

A gigantic fire ravaged this weekend the forest massif of Troodos  in southern Cyprus, a very touristic island in the Mediterranean, facing Turkey and Lebanon. 55 km2 of forests were destroyed, the most serious fire in 50 years. A forest fire leaves the ground bare defenseless against erosion caused by wind and rain, returns to the atmosphere the CO2 that trees have taken years to capture and kills thousands of animals.  95% of fires in Europe take place in the Mediterranean. We regularly call on the public to help protect Mediterranean forests against fires. Forest restoration and conservation works reduce the number of fires and limit their spread when they occur.
